Greek Subtitle Generator

Add Greek subtitles to any video automatically. Upload a video with Greek speech and get accurate, timed subtitles in the Greek alphabet back, with the accent on every word placed correctly and the export encoded so it displays everywhere.

Greek video on social media is written two ways — in the Greek alphabet and in Greeklish, Greek typed in Latin letters. The transcription produces proper Greek by default and can export Greeklish for the audiences that read it faster.

What makes Greek subtitles different

Every language breaks in its own way. These are the parts that matter for Greek.

Proper Greek script

Subtitles are written in the Greek alphabet with monotonic accents, and exported as UTF-8 so they display as Greek rather than as boxes in VLC, YouTube or your editor.

The accent on the right syllable

Greek marks stress with the tonos, and moving it changes the word: νόμος is law, νομός is prefecture. The transcript places it from the audio and from context.

Greeklish for social

A large share of Greek social media is written in Latin letters. Export transliterated Greeklish for that audience, or keep the Greek alphabet — the transcription is the same.

Cypriot and regional Greek

Standard Greek transcribes cleanly, and Cypriot Greek and regional accents are handled from the audio as far as they diverge from the standard.

How to add Greek subtitles to a video

Upload, review, export. No timeline scrubbing and no timecodes typed by hand.

  1. 1

    Upload your video

Create your free account, then drop in an MP4, MOV, MKV or audio file containing Greek speech. There is nothing to install.

  2. 2

    Generate Greek subtitles

The model transcribes the Greek audio into the Greek alphabet with the tonos on every stressed syllable, and times each line to the frame. Greeklish export is available if that suits your audience.

  3. 3

    Edit and export

Correct any names or terms in the editor, then download the video with Greek subtitles burned in, or export a clean .srt or .vtt file.

Greek script, Greeklish, or both

Modern Greek is written in its own alphabet with a single accent mark, the tonos, on the stressed syllable of nearly every word. That accent is not decoration: it is part of the spelling, and misplacing it produces a different word or a misspelling that a Greek reader notices at once. The transcript places it from the audio, cross-checked against context for the pairs that only stress tells apart.

Greeklish is the complication that is specific to Greek online. Since the days of early text messaging, Greeks have typed Greek in Latin letters, and a substantial part of the audience on Instagram and TikTok still reads it more quickly than the Greek alphabet. There is no single standard for it — η can be i or h, θ can be th or 8 — so the export uses the most common conventions and lets you adjust in the editor.

Beyond the script, the model handles the vowel spellings that all sound the same (ι, η, υ, ει, οι), which are chosen by knowing the word rather than by hearing it, and the Cypriot and island accents that shift pronunciation from the Athens standard. The export is UTF-8 in either script so nothing degrades between the download and the player.

Frequently Asked Questions

Specific to Greek, not the generic list.

Does it output Greek letters or Greeklish?

Greek alphabet by default, with the tonos placed correctly. Greeklish — Greek in Latin letters — can be exported instead for audiences that read it faster on a phone.

Are the accents placed correctly?

Yes. The tonos is placed on the stressed syllable from the audio and from context, which matters for word pairs that differ only in stress.

Does it handle Cypriot Greek?

Yes. Cypriot and regional Greek are transcribed from the audio as far as they diverge from the standard, and the editor is there for anything the model was unsure about.

Will Greek display correctly in the exported SRT?

Yes. Subtitle files are exported as UTF-8, which is what keeps Greek letters from turning into question marks in older players.

Can I get English subtitles from a Greek video?

Translated tracks are on the roadmap. The Greek transcript is produced first so a translation is made from a corrected source.

Can I edit my captions before exporting?

Yes. Correct the transcript, adjust timings, choose a caption style and then export the finished video or a clean SRT or VTT file.
