Chinese Subtitle Generator

Add Chinese subtitles to any video automatically. Upload a video with Mandarin speech and get accurate, timed subtitles back in Simplified or Traditional characters, with lines segmented for reading rather than dumped as one block.

Chinese subtitles are expected on almost every video in the Chinese-speaking world, and viewers notice bad ones immediately. The transcription resolves homophones from context, handles accented Mandarin, and outputs the character set your audience reads.

What makes Chinese subtitles different

Every language breaks in its own way. These are the parts that matter for Chinese.

Simplified and Traditional

Output Simplified characters for a mainland audience or Traditional for Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. Vocabulary differences between the regions are handled in the conversion, not just the characters.

Homophones resolved

Mandarin has a huge number of syllables that sound identical and mean different things. The transcript chooses the characters from the sentence around them rather than from the sound alone.

Accented Mandarin

Standard Putonghua transcribes cleanly, and Mandarin with a Taiwanese, Sichuan, Northeastern or southern accent is handled from the audio without a setting.

Lines cut at the clause

Chinese has no spaces, so lines are broken at clause boundaries and limited by character count — the way professional Chinese subtitles are formatted for a phone screen.

How to add Chinese subtitles to a video

Upload, review, export. No timeline scrubbing and no timecodes typed by hand.

  1. 1

    Upload your video

Create your free account, then drop in an MP4, MOV, MKV or audio file containing Chinese speech. There is nothing to install.

  2. 2

    Generate Chinese subtitles

The model transcribes the Mandarin audio into Chinese characters, choosing between homophones from context, then outputs Simplified or Traditional as you prefer and breaks lines at clause boundaries.

  3. 3

    Edit and export

Correct any names or terms in the editor, then download the video with Chinese subtitles burned in, or export a clean .srt or .vtt file.

Why Chinese subtitles are a different problem

In most languages subtitles are an accessibility feature. In Chinese they are the default: nearly every video, film and drama carries them, because the spoken language has so many homophones that even native speakers rely on the text. That means the audience has high standards, and a subtitle with the wrong character in it is noticed the way a spelling error in a headline would be.

Choosing the character is the core of the work. A Mandarin syllable like shì can be written a dozen ways with a dozen meanings, and the correct one is decided by the words around it. The model reads the sentence to choose, which is the difference between a subtitle that reads naturally and one that reads as a string of plausible sounds. Where context does not settle it, the editor makes the fix a single click.

Then there is the split between Simplified and Traditional, which is not just a font. Vocabulary differs between the mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong — 软件 versus 軟體, 视频 versus 影片 — and a good conversion handles the words, not only the strokes. Output whichever your audience reads, and export as UTF-8 so the characters survive every player and platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

Specific to Chinese, not the generic list.

Can I choose Simplified or Traditional Chinese?

Yes. Output Simplified for a mainland audience or Traditional for Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. The conversion handles regional vocabulary differences as well as the characters.

How does it choose between homophones?

From context — the characters are chosen to fit the sentence, not just the sound. The editor is there for any ambiguous case.

Does it handle accented or regional Mandarin?

Yes. Mandarin with a Taiwanese, Sichuan, Northeastern or southern accent transcribes from the audio. Cantonese and other Chinese languages are handled separately.

Will Chinese characters display correctly in the exported SRT?

Yes. Files are exported as UTF-8, and burned-in caption styles use fonts with full CJK coverage so no character falls back to a box.

Can I get English subtitles from a Chinese video?

Translated tracks are on the roadmap. The Chinese transcript comes first so a translation is made from a corrected source.

Can I edit my captions before exporting?

Yes. Correct the transcript, adjust timings, choose a caption style and then export the finished video or a clean SRT or VTT file.
