Finnish Subtitle Generator

Add Finnish subtitles to any video automatically. Upload a video with Finnish speech and get accurate, timed subtitles back with ä and ö in place, double consonants and vowels written correctly and every case ending intact.

Finnish has fifteen cases, vowel harmony, consonant gradation and words that run to twenty letters or more. The transcription handles the grammar rather than guessing at word endings, and it handles spoken Finnish, which differs a lot from written Finnish.

What makes Finnish subtitles different

Every language breaks in its own way. These are the parts that matter for Finnish.

Puhekieli understood

Spoken Finnish shortens and reshapes words — mä for minä, ei oo for ei ole. The transcript writes what was said, and you can standardise to written Finnish in the editor if you prefer.

Single and double letters

Tuli, tuuli and tulli are three different words. Vowel and consonant length is written exactly, because in Finnish the difference is the meaning.

Fifteen cases from context

Talossa, talosta, taloon. The case ending is chosen from the sentence rather than defaulting to the base form, so the subtitle says what the speaker meant.

Words that fill a line

Finnish words are long and compounds longer. Lines are split by width so a word is never broken across two subtitle cards in a vertical frame.

How to add Finnish subtitles to a video

Upload, review, export. No timeline scrubbing and no timecodes typed by hand.

  1. 1

    Upload your video

Create your free account, then drop in an MP4, MOV, MKV or audio file containing Finnish speech. There is nothing to install.

  2. 2

    Generate Finnish subtitles

The model transcribes the Finnish audio, writes single and double letters as spoken, resolves the case ending on each word, and splits lines so long words are never broken.

  3. 3

    Edit and export

Correct any names or terms in the editor, then download the video with Finnish subtitles burned in, or export a clean .srt or .vtt file.

Finnish subtitles that respect the grammar

Finnish is not related to the languages around it, and models trained mostly on Indo-European speech treat it badly. Fifteen grammatical cases, expressed as suffixes on the noun, mean that one word has dozens of forms. Vowel harmony decides which vowels those suffixes can contain. Consonant gradation changes the stem itself — kukka becomes kukan. A transcript has to know all of this to write the ending correctly, because the audio for two endings is often almost identical.

Length matters as much as letters. Finnish distinguishes short and long vowels and consonants, and writing one letter where there should be two produces a different word. Tuli is fire, tuuli is wind, tulli is customs. The transcript writes the length that was spoken, which is a detail most general tools blur.

Finally there is the gap between spoken and written Finnish, which is wider than in most languages. Puhekieli — everyday spoken Finnish — shortens pronouns, drops endings and uses forms that never appear in print. The transcript follows the speaker by default, and if you want subtitles in formal written Finnish the editor lets you standardise before you export.

Frequently Asked Questions

Specific to Finnish, not the generic list.

Does it handle spoken Finnish (puhekieli)?

Yes. Everyday spoken forms are transcribed as said. If you prefer formal written Finnish on screen, you can standardise the text in the editor before exporting.

Are double vowels and consonants written correctly?

Yes. Vowel and consonant length is transcribed exactly, since in Finnish it distinguishes words. Ä and ö are written and exported as UTF-8.

Does it get case endings right?

Case endings are chosen from the grammar of the sentence, with vowel harmony and consonant gradation applied, rather than defaulting to the base form of the word.

Can I export Finnish subtitles as SRT?

Yes. Export a .srt or .vtt for YouTube or Yle-style players, or download the video with Finnish subtitles burned in for Reels, Shorts and TikTok.

Can I get English subtitles from a Finnish video?

Translated tracks are on the roadmap. The Finnish transcript comes first so a translation is made from a corrected source.

Can I edit my captions before exporting?

Yes. Correct the transcript, adjust timings, choose a caption style and then export the finished video or a clean SRT or VTT file.
